Image "You need to warm the glass in your hand first," said Ted Hall, the proprietor of Long Meadow Ranch, a 650-acre property in the Mayacamas Mountains high above the Napa Valley in northern California. Mr. Hall was standing in the ranch's wine cave, a rammed-earth structure that smelled of earth, damp and pure, with a hint of spilled wine. An original Andy Warhol cow print was hanging in the foyer. On the wood bar, Mr. Hall displayed two wine bottles, proper glasses and a tray of cheese.

ImageDRIVE to Roxbury, Conn., in Litchfield County — about an hour and a half north of New York City — and you’ll think you’ve somehow made it to Vermont. Maple- and hemlock-lined dirt roads, stone fences in various states of repair and grazing Scottish Highland cattle interrupt the open landscape.

White Slopes Are Going Green
Image Skiers at Jiminy Peak in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts will see plenty of construction at the resort this season, though it’s not a new base lodge or chair lift. This fall, the resort broke ground on a $3.9 million, 253-foot-tall wind turbine that will generate a third of the resort’s energy consumption. By avoiding fossil fuels, Jiminy Peak hopes to save more than a half-million dollars annually and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a healthier bottom line and environment.

Hyannis Day Trip

Hyannis, midway up the southern shore of Cape Cod, is often regarded simply as the departure point for the ferry to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard or as a waystation to seaside hamlets farther up the cape. But its jamming harbor, Kennedy mystique and silly family tours make Hyannis an enjoyable, accessible day trip in its own right, especially with kids in tow.
